Progress with Pixar People
With NeXT falling apart, all Jobs had left was Pixar, which he bought almost as a hobby business. That, perhaps, was why he was able to hold off on demanding everything be done his way. The Pixar staff was tight-knit and shared a common culture, so they did not need his genius. They already had their own. Ed Catmull, their leader, knew what they were getting into with Jobs and stepped up to mentor him. He found that “the other Steve” simply did not get why he upset people. Jobs never had a mentor like Catmull before, and the lessons began to seep in. He learned to be more subtle, to be patient, to read people, and to take advice, starting with Catmull’s. Around the same time, Jobs fell in love with Laurene, who had similarly eclectic interests but also a strong self-sufficiency that made their relationship possible. She became both a steadying and humanizing influence.
